Prestigious medal for professor
Prof Karen Heywood (ENV) has been awarded this year’s Challenger Medal from the Challenger Society for Marine Science, in recognition of her major contribution to physical oceanography in the UK and worldwide.
The Challenger Council stated that the award was particularly for her contribution to understanding physical oceanographic processes in the Antarctic, for her work in applying new techniques, particularly gliders, to understanding physical ocean processes and for her wider work in developing UK marine science, particularly in SCOR.
This is the third time the medal has been awarded to a member of ENV faculty - the previous recipients were Prof Peter Liss and Prof Tim Jickells.
