Research Interests

Marine biogeochemistry; trace gases; ocean acidification

Biography

My main research interests have for many years focussed on investigation of marine trace gases which play important roles in climate modulation and atmospheric chemistry (e.g. dimethyl sulphide, alkyl nitrates and volatiles containing bromine and iodine). A significant part of the work has been on research ships, investigating trace gas distributions and production processes in surface seawater and their sea-to-air emissions. Since the early 1990s I have participated in a number of international experiments which have examined the role of the trace nutrient iron in the biogeochemistry of High Nitrate Low Chlorophyll oceanic regions. These include the first four in situ iron addition experiments, conducted in the Equatorial Pacific and Southern Oceans. Latterly, I have been involved in examination of the effects of ocean acidification on trace gas production and my interests have expanded to include selenium, bromine and iodine in Antarctic ice cores. I am currently working on a project which is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and which is to examine the effects of acidification on a coastal ecosystem.
