Research Interests

Marine biogeochemistry, global change, the marine carbon cycle, the impact of nutrient supply, microbial community composition and photochemistry on fluxes of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, the influence of temperature and pH on plankton activity.

Biography

I have a BSc in Zoology (Marine) and PhD in Civil Engineering (Public Health), both from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. I was a Research Fellow at the University of Wales; Bangor (1988-1996), and a NERC Advanced Research Fellow at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (1996-2001).

Recent research grants include a NERC consortium - the Atlantic Meridional Transect programme which aimed to quantify the nature & causes of ecological & biogeochemical variability in the planktonic ecosystems of the Atlantic Ocean, a NERC SOLAS grant to investigate the impact of coastal upwelling on open ocean biogeochemistry and air-sea exchange of climatically important gases, and a NERC grant to investigate spatial variability in marine productivity using underwater gliders. I have participated in ca. 30 open ocean research cruises, coastal mesocosm experiments and coastal time series studies, including a 3 month stay at the Australian Antarctic base DAVIS.

I am a member of the executive committee of the IGBP/SCOR programme IMBER, the UK SCOR and IGBP national committees, the FP7 EuroMarine Advisory Board and the European Research Council Review Panel. I am a Fellow of the Society of Biology and a past President of the Challenger Society for Marine Science.
