Research Interests
Applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and statistical methods in the environmental sciences, particularly with respect to landscape planning and visualisation; the geography of health; environmental economics and waste management.
Biography
My academic background is in human geography and since I moved to UEA in 1990 I have been involved in a range of projects concerned with applications of GIS and statistical techniques. In recent years this has included studies funded by the NHS (modelling accessibility to health services), the UK Environment Agency (the WaterCost (http://www.watercost.org/) project concerned with strategies for reducing diffuse agricultural pollution), and the UK Food Standards Agency (PCB and dioxin contamination in the food chain). At present I have a particular interest in issues of future rural land-use change, including involvement in two projects funded by the Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU) programme, namely RELU-Biomass (http://www.relu-biomass.org.uk/) and ChREAM (http://www.uea.ac.uk/env/cserge/research/relu/index) and an EU FP7 project RUFUS (http://www.rufus-eu.de/) concerned with rural development futures in nine countries. These projects also make use of the specialist visualisation equipment in the SSEVREL facility (http://www.uea.ac.uk/zicer/ssevrel/) within the School of Environmental Sciences.
I am currently a Steering Committee member of the GIS Research UK Conference Series (including convenor of the 2004 conference held at UEA), an Editorial Board member of the journals Computers, Environment & Urban Systems, Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design, and Health & Place.
