PhD Studentships Available Carbon Dioxide Uptake and Carbonate Chemistry in UK Shelf Waters Mechanisms for anthropogenic carbon uptake by the Southern Ocean |
Research Interests
Marine carbon cycle; quantification of oceanic sources and sinks for atmospheric carbon dioxide; interactions and feedbacks between marine biogeochemical cycles, role of natural iron fertilisation in Southern Ocean productivity; effect of a high CO2 and ocean acidification on marine biota.
Biography
After an MSc in Soil Science with a focus on biogeochemical cycles (1991), I moved into oceanography for PhD research on CO2 (carbon dioxide) air-sea exchange in the Atlantic Ocean. The oceans cover two-thirds of our Blue Planet and major findings, like the importance of iron supply for marine ecosystems, are still being made. Another fun thing about oceanography is the multidisciplinary, seagoing fieldwork. Central in my research are processes affecting the marine carbon cycle, notably the role of marine biota, ocean circulation, iron supply, sea ice, and ocean acidification.
Currently, I am investigating the transport of inorganic carbon out of the Weddell Gyre and across Drake Passage (Southern Ocean). The carbonate chemistry of UK shelf waters is another topic of research. Ongoing research projects include: EU CarboChange, NERC ANDREX, SOFI-Oceans2025, NCEO, and UKOARP (UK Ocean Acidification Research Project) themes 1 & 2. Data quality, maintaining time series and creating better access to marine CO2 data are extremely important. I contribute to these aims as chair of the SOCAT (Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas) and as a member of the SOLAS-IMBER joint Carbon Working Group on Surface Ocean Systems (SIC WG1). I am a (co-)author of 34 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters and (co-)supervise 3 PhD students.
