Biography

After completing my BSc Geography degree from the University of Greenwich I moved into a GIS support role for local government where I developed, supported, and used GIS on a daily basis across many government departments. I played a key role in a wide variety of GIS projects (including the European project LogIN) and implemented standards for GIS data management. Working in industry as a GIS Analyst for over a decade my work has been extremely varied, the more recent roles being to develop GIS solutions and manage spatial database infrastructures.

While working I completed an MSc in GIS from Southampton University, I graduated with distinction and was awarded the Royal Geographical Society award for my Masters project which applied GIS models within an EIA framework to assess the impact on tranquility from road development. I have also worked with offshore underwater projects, including developing a multi criteria evaluation model to assess the risk in building offshore wind farm development around the UK shores.

I arrived at the UEA to begin my PhD at the beginning of 2011.

Key Research Interests

My research brief is to visualise the future of rural landscapes which face increased pressure to adapt to a changing climate and a shift in environmental values. Using scenario methodologies the intention is to explore solutions and tradeoffs with stakeholders in order to develop a sustainable multi-functional future landscape.

I am concentrating on working at the catchment scale rather than using regional or national scales and central to these studies is the use of cutting edge technology to increase the ability of stakeholders to interact with their catchment landscape. The first stage of research has been to develop a smart phone application to communicate the concept of ecosystem services within the landscape. The second stage of research will develop a means for stakeholders to actively participate in the creation of visualisations, to do this I will work on improving the interface between GIS and visualisation outputs. The third stage will aim to adapt the visualisations into an interactive ‘What IF?’ decision support tool for stakeholders to explore future scenarios.

The overall aim of my PhD is to communicate future change in river catchment landscapes and facilitate the involvement of stakeholders in decision making for catchment management.
