Using my experiences with young people I was able to write a supporting statement that the UEA was looking for from its applicants...
After finishing my undergraduate studies in Geography I completed my PGCE at the UEA. I chose to acquire QTS here because of its excellent reputation and the university based nature of the course. I also found their partnership with Suffolk schools particularly appealing as I did not want to move away from my home near Ipswich, Suffolk.
The UEA tries to ensure that school placements are close to where trainees live within Suffolk and Norfolk. They were successful in doing this for me. One placement was in Leiston whilst the other was in Ipswich. I also found commuting to and from the university was relatively easy due to the excellent train links between Ipswich and Norwich, taking only 45 minutes, as well as road access along the A140.
Additionally, I found the tutors at the UEA very supportive and always there for advice. Having a subject group of trainee teachers to work with was also a great asset to the PGCE. This gave us a chance to discuss our pressures and triumphs within our teaching placements as well as swap lesson ideas and resources.
One thing that I found very important before applying for the PGCE was that I had enough relevant experience of working with young people before I started the course. This was a key thing that the UEA were looking for in their applicants.
I gained teaching experience through volunteer work at University. I led an after-school homework club once a week at a primary school in Leicester. I also spent time discussing career options with Year 9 pupils at a secondary school careers day. Additionally, I observed teachers at local primary and secondary schools. This gave me a real insight into what it was like to be a teacher and that this was the job for me.
Using my experiences of working with young people I was able to write a supporting statement that the UEA was looking for from its applicants. I gave specific examples of my experiences, why I was enthusiastic to be a teacher and my reasons for choosing this particular course.
Reflecting on this, here are some key points to think about when you are applying to do your PGCE at the UEA:
- If you live in Suffolk don't worry that you will have to move away. The UEA has a strong partnership with Suffolk schools.
- Make sure you have gained enough experience of working with young people before applying.
- Make sure you give specific examples of your experience of working with young people in your supporting statement.
- Show that you have a passion for your subject and age range you want to teach.
