This information is for prospective teacher training students who have been advised to attend the Science Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course:

Subject Focus

The course will focus on KS3 and KS4 science subject knowledge, identified by the subject audits completed at the start of the course. These completed audits will be used as one of the starting points for the course.

Experience suggests that for most prospective science teachers focussing on areas of KS3 and KS4 is most welcomed at the early stages of the course, particularly in their non-specialist science areas.

In our experience trainees' needs are likely to include the following topics, with an emphasis on investigations, problem solving and practical activities:

  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Forces, Motion and Energy
  • The Periodic Table
  • Atomic Structure and Bonding
  • Quantitative Chemistry, The Mole, Electrolysis
  • Earth and Space

In all cases the emphasis will be on updating the participants' subject knowledge. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used, including:

  • Practical work
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Role play
  • Problem solving
  • Interactive teaching
  • Peer tutoring
  • Discussion
  • Exposition and practice
  • Use of ICT
  • Seminars
  • Workshops
  • Self study and self assessment
