Building on our excellent Ofsted grades, a long standing and strong partnership with regional schools that has been highly praised by our external examiners, and very high levels of satisfaction among our PGCE students and Newly Qualified Teachers, we are delighted to be involved in the development of School Direct.

School Direct is a new approach to Initial Teacher Education in which schools work in partnership with an Initial Teacher Training Provider to deliver teacher education. School Direct places are allocated by the Teaching Agency to schools rather than to the University, and schools, rather than the University, select the candidates that they wish to train and possibly employ after the candidate's training. Schools are able to bid for either a salaried or non-salaried place.

For further information about School Direct please see the Teaching Agency web School Direct pages.

Applications are made in the first instance through the School Direct Applications System, but schools may ask for supplementary information as part of their admissions process.

All School Direct trainees undertaking their Initial Teacher Education with UEA will be fully registered students of the University. This means that not only will they receive the highest quality training from experienced staff within a well established partnership with schools, but they will have full access to a range of University resources including library facilities, electronic resources, support and welfare services and the Sports Park. You will be supported in your training by a team of specialist UEA and school-based staff, following a programme of study and school-based experience that has been highly rated by previous students and Newly Qualified Teachers. The external examiners for the PGCE programmes have consistently commented that the University's partnership with schools is exemplary and we consider our partnership approach to Initial Teacher Education as one of our strengths.

Structure of the Training

The ethos of School Direct is that schools work with Initial Teacher Education providers to design innovative and flexible training. The existing PGCE course at UEA has benefitted for many years from a close working relationship with schools in the region, who have been involved in the development of the training we provide. Building on these strong foundations we are working with School Direct partners to develop new training routes. The training we will offer to School Direct candidates in 2013/4 will be based on the PGCE(M) programme, with partner schools deciding what elements of the training we should deliver to their trainees.

The table above indicates which training options are available through which schools.

The routes we will be offering are:

PGCE (M)

The trainee follows the whole PGCE(M) programme at UEA, including subject-specific Curriculum training and Professional Development training. School-based experience is undertaken in the Lead School or other schools within the partnership.

Students complete a number of assessments embedded in their training leading to Qualified Teacher Status and 60 credits at Master's level.

At the end of the programme the trainee graduates with QTS and a PGCE(M).

Year-long Curriculum and Professional Development

The trainee follows the same programme of study and training as students registered for the PGCE(M), combining Curriculum and Professional Development strands, but does not complete the assignments leading to Masters level credits.

School-based experience is undertaken in the Lead School or other schools within the partnership.

The trainee's classroom performance and portfolio of evidence are assessed for Qualified Teacher Status.

Curriculum programme

The trainee follows the Curriculum component of the PGCE course for the whole year, with Professional Development training being delivered within the Lead School consortium.

School-based experience is undertaken in the Lead School or other schools within the partnership.

The trainee's classroom performance and portfolio of evidence are assessed for Qualified Teacher Status, but there is no assessment for Masters level credits.

Curriculum programme and Autumn semester Professional Development

The trainee follows the Curriculum component of the PGCE course for the whole year and also undertakes the Professional Development programme in the autumn semester only. Professional Development training is picked up by the school through the spring.

School-based experience is undertaken in the Lead School or other schools within the partnership.

The trainee's classroom performance and portfolio of evidence are assessed for Qualified Teacher Status, but there is no assessment for Masters level credits.

Your University based training will be delivered over 36 weeks beginning in September. Our initial teacher education programmes for Secondary are structured into blocks of training at the University followed by two substantial periods of school-based experience. In general Monday and Tuesday are spent at UEA for Curriculum training, Wednesday is spent at UEA for Professional Development training (or in schools where this option is not taken), with Thursday and Friday designated as either independent study or school-based. At least two-thirds of your time will be spent in schools.

The first block of UEA training takes place from September to half-term, with the second block commencing after Christmas and running until half term.

During these UEA sessions you will discuss experiences with others on the course and learn more about the theory and practice of teaching. Expect to be involved in a range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars and practical workshops.

The training School Direct trainees receive in schools will be designed and directed by the school, but in general School-based experiences provide students with the opportunity to develop practice with the support and guidance of experienced teachers acting as mentors.

You will be assessed against the national Teaching Standards published by the Teaching Agency. Assessment of your competence as a teacher for Qualified Teacher Status will be made by the experienced teachers in your school and University tutors. Those students being assessed for Masters level credit for the award of a PGCE(M) will also complete written coursework embedded within the programme of study. There are no end of year examinations.
