Teaching in Economics

A variety of teaching methods are used within the School of Economics. However, a typical module has two lectures per week, and one seminar.

While lectures are attended by all students taking the module, seminars are held in smaller groups of around 15-18 students. The purpose of seminars being for students to ask questions, provide feedback on the module, discuss topics amongst themselves, and give presentations on selected topics.

In quantitative economics modules, seminars are held in one of the University's computer labs, where students carry out statistical and econometric analysis of economic data using modern econometric software packages.

Assessment for most modules is by a combination of coursework and examination, although some modules have coursework only (sometimes in the form of a project). Module guides will contain exact assessment details and other information.

The Economics Staff Student Liaison Committee was set up because the School of Economics believes that there is a need to supplement existing channels for feedback from students to staff. In principle, this committee can raise any issue touching on the academic or social well-being of current UEA students taking degrees with a significant component in Economics.

A publication entitled 'The ECO Guide to Study Skills', which contains vital information on essay writing, seminar participation, examination skills, curriculum vitae preparation, and so on is available to all new students on enrolment.
