What if we stopped pioneering the fight against disease?

Through 'The Difference' Campaign, we plan to accelerate and focus our programme on some of the major global health challenges. We aim to find answers to a number of conditions that currently affect millions across the world and to make Norwich a world class city for health development, a byword for medical advancement.

Norwich is ranked 4th in the UK for the number of "most highly cited scientists", after London, Cambridge and Oxford – confirmation of an outstanding international reputation.

The Difference we've made

  • Since 2006, UEA has been training the doctors, nurses and therapists of tomorrow through our own distinctive approach. Over 900 doctors have already graduated from our newly created Medical School.
  • We have, in the Norwich Research Park (NRP), helped create a unique environment for microbial science and we are researching cures for some of the most threatening diseases and conditions facing humankind. The NRP is home to a world-class university, the UK's eighth busiest hospital, several world-class centres for plant and microbial sciences, the country's premier food research institute, and one of only two Genome Mapping Centres in the UK.

The further Difference we'll make

With the additional support to be raised through 'The Difference' Campaign we can:

  • Take full advantage of the unique collection of centres on the NRP, exploiting their expertise to help address some of the largest challenges we face such as cancer. There is a window of opportunity to be supremely ambitious.
  • Create real benefits for patients through translational research. This involves turning early-stage innovations into new health therapies – medicines and treatments that make a difference to the lives and futures of real people.
  • Focus upon areas of research where we possess specific talents, and where the NRP represents the most likely place in the world to take the lead in finding answers. These include prostate cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, antibiotic resistance microbes and bone disease.
  • Attractan extra 100 research and teaching staff by 2014 to support our growing medical research programme. Working in close partnership with the Norwich & Norfolk University Hospital, we plan to create a new, state-of-the-art research building to accommodate the new scientists and deliver their ground-breaking work.
