What if we stopped pioneering the fight against disease?

UEA has always attracted creative students and staff. The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is "perhaps the greatest resource of its type on any British campus", according to the Times Good University Guide, and The School of World Art and Museology is currently ranked 1st in the UK for world-leading research.

Those studying literature, creative writing and art history at UEA expect to receive the finest there is in terms of teaching and support. We were delighted this year to be awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize, the most prestigious award in Higher Education, in recognition of our outstanding contribution in the field of Creative Writing.

The Difference we've made

  • The list of major award-winners among our creative writing alumni is a veritable 'Who's Who' of contemporary literature, and they have won hundreds of national and international prizes, including Man Booker.
  • Thanks to a benefaction, we are proud to host one of the world's most important global art collections at the acclaimed Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. We have introduced nearly 100,000 schoolchildren to major figures of modern art such as Degas, Picasso, Giacometti, Henry Moore and Francis Bacon, to name but a few.
  • Norwich, with UEA at its heart, was recently named by UNESCO as England's first City of Literature, a unique accolade that recognises the special contribution we have made in this field.

The further Difference we'll make

With the additional support to be raised through the Difference Campaign:

  • We will ensure that the Sainsbury Centre, once perceived as a hidden gem of both UEA and Norfolk, becomes more widely and publicly acknowledged as a jewel in the crown of the region and nation. This will involve new and exciting exhibitions that will inspire and stimulate audiences from all over the world.
  • Typically a third of our literary postgraduate students go on to achieve publication. To maintain and improve this notable level of success, we must continue to attract the very best students and academics. This will ensure we are able to make a difference through the written word, touching people and influencing cultures at home and abroad.
  • We will extend our excellence into film and scriptwriting, ensuring our Faculty of Arts and Humanities as a leading centre for those wishing to pursue careers in modern, digital and entertainment media and to become the most sought-after producers and screenwriters of tomorrow.
  • Excellence, like difference, comes at a cost. In order to continue to be a hotbed of creativity, fresh thinking and new ideas, we must continue to attract the most talented academics and students and provide them with stimulating and supportive environments. This means further support for scholarships and teaching.
