What if we stopped pioneering the fight against disease?

Sometimes being different makes people and organisations a target. That UEA was the target for a sophisticated illegal hack of emails and other documents ahead of the important UN climate change summit in 2009 is evidence of our international prominence in the field and the difference we are already making.

The urgency of tackling climate change and the necessity for UEA to make a difference has never been greater. The University is uniquely placed to find solutions to this, the greatest challenge facing our world today.

Within our vision at the cutting-edge of climatology is the complex science to detect which unusual droughts, storms and other extreme weather can only be satisfactorily explained by manmade climate change

The Difference we've made

In recognising that the challenges posed by climate change are complex and too important for any single institution to answer we established:

  • The world-leading Climatic Research Unit in 1972, the first institute to produce evidence that the world was warming;
  • The multi-university Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, the first institute to focus on the wider aspects of climate change and to develop adaptation and mitigation strategies for the UK, China and worldwide;
  • The Fudan Tyndall Centre, in Shanghai, in 2011

UEA has consistently and effectively contributed to shaping policy and action –

  • The first simulations to explain past climate change
  • The first global temperature record demonstrating that the planet has warmed
  • Developed the imperative to devise strategies for limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius while preparing for the impacts of 4 degrees;
  • Exerting seminal influence on the development of international climate-related policies, fielding more authors of the UN reports on climate change than any other university in the world.

The further Difference we'll make

With the additional support to be raised through 'The Difference' Campaign we will invest in high level, groundbreaking research to:

  • Ensure that the UK and other nations play their full part in slowing global temperature rise and preparing for the impacts of climate change. We are perfectly placed to play a key role.
  • Cut the UK's emissions with speed and efficiency, focusing our efforts on adaptation and mitigation projects, such as 'The Radical Plan'.
  • Build a global academic partnership with other countries playing a key role in international negotiations, sharing knowledge with universities in China, Brazil and elsewhere. Given the well-documented scale of the problem in China, our current focus, in the form of The Fudan Tyndall Centre, lies there.
