Welcome to New Students

A very warm welcome to our undergraduate and postgraduate students joining The School of International Development (DEV) in the near future. This webpage is to let you know what will happen when you join DEV, as most do, in the Autumn Semester. It also gives you advice on preparing for your arrival.

To find out what's going on at DEV at the moment, check out our newsletter

Postgraduate key dates

On arrival in DEV:
You will either have freshers week if you are an undergrad, or an induction week if a postgrad (both taught masters and PhD students are welcome).  During this time there will be a welcome address by the Head of School, where you will also have a buffet lunch and a chance to meet your lecturers and other students.

Info on your UEA identity and email

Registration will allow you to access our intranet pages where we have the following information:

  1. Our comprehensive links to organisations where information on jobs, grants, networking are provided.
  2. DEV grants for travelling available.
  3. More information on interships - especially for Masters students.
  4. Our in-house guide to DEV's obligations and expectations for PhD students.
  5. Our in-house guide to key skills, including advice on essay and dissertation writing.
  6. Administrative information, including useful links regarding fieldwork, research and travel.

You will also be assigned an adviser, normally a member of staff. There is also a woman's adviser and a senior adviser both of whom you may turn to.

Postgraduate students are offered the chance to meet various unit conveners to help you decide which units to take.

At some point, you will even start attending your lecturers and seminars!

Preperation for your courses:
We suggest that you start to read around your interest area mainly by looking on-line.  All our degree pages have suggested reading lists - see relevant webpages.   Don't worry if you can't find a text, however, there are plenty of other documents on the web that you could look at.  We simply ask that you come with your enthusiasm and knowledge of the latest debates in your particular arena.

Advice for your arrival in the UK:
Our weather is very changeable in the autumn, and might swing from +20 degrees to not much above freezing within a short space of time.  Although it can rain, East Anglia is the driest part of the country.
