Participants

There were three groups participating in the project:

Women's group
women's group
The first was a group of Muslim and Christian women aged between 18 and 60, inhabitants of Tudun Wada and Kabala West respectively, who met weekly in a primary school in Tudun Wada, supported by a local woman, Hauwa. Hauwa is a health professional and an experienced community developer, who had been working with the team since 2007. The Tudun Wada group was established in August 2008 and continued until the end of the project.

The women's group discussed different issues in relation to violence at household level, including
  • verbal abuse and physical violence inflicted by husbands on their wives
  • marital sex and violence
  • love marriage as opposed to arranged marriage
  • violence during pregnancy and its effects
  • polygamy and relationships between co-wives
  • the relationship with a mother-in-law
  • violence between parents and children

Christian youth group
Boys group
The second group consisted of Christian youth in Kabala West, who also started their activities in August 2008. This was a largely male group with a handful of young women participants. It was first facilitated by Emmanuel Gyong and later by Abubakar Liman, both lecturers at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

The topics discussed by the youth group included:

1) Health:
  • basic knowledge on diseases, such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and STDs (how people get infected; how to protect oneself; how to get tested; how to identify symptoms; how to treat the disease)
  • reproductive health

2) Gender:
  • conceptualising gender
  • gender, power and violence

3) Violence: Muslim boys group?
  • different types of violence (structural, personal/private, institutional)
  • religion and violence

Muslim youth group

The third group was of Muslim youth, again very largely male with a few females. This group came from Unguwar Mu’azu and started in December 2008. It was also facilitated by Abubakar Liman.

The topics discussed during group meetings were similar to the ones mentioned above for the Christian youth group.
