Biography
I joined DEV as a lecturer in 2011 after working for two years as an associate tutor in the School. I’m currently involved in developing the new MRes in Development Practice and the academic and employability skills support provided to DEV students. My research interests include gender and rural development, gender and collective action as well as the links between tourism, culture and development.
Academic Background
I have a PhD in Development Studies and an MA in Rural Development from the University of East Anglia.
Key Research Interests
Gender and rural development; gender and collective action; tourism, culture and development
Area expertise: Latin America (particularly Andes)
Research
My doctoral research analysed the impacts that membership in producer groups has on rural women in the Puno region (Southern Peru). I applied a holistic approach for assessing women’s experiences, examining economic as well as social and political aspects of group membership. I looked at changes in women’s role as producers and in social relations at household level as well as women’s experiences of leadership and political participation at community level.
Other past research focused on tourism in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on community-based tourism.
