Student Development Society (DEV SOC)

The Development Society, known as Dev Soc, is for students and staff studying both in the school and outside. Dev Soc offers a space for where like-minded people can get together and socialise.

Dev Soc hold a variety of exciting events throughout the year, such as film nights, pot luck parties, socials and of course we like to do our bit for the developing world and raise some money for good causes! The most highly anticipated event as ever is the Dev Ball which we hold every year before Christmas time.

If you fancy coming along to any of the events or signing up, watch out for posters throughout the DEV building, our Facebook site - that is updated regularly (below) or simply drop us an email!

Frequently asked questions

What is Dev Soc?
Dev Soc is the student society which runs alongside the School of International Development. As time has gone by it would seem that the society has taken a more social role within the School. Because the School already lay on a series of informative seminars, we have attempted to use Dev Soc as a space for where like-minded people can get together and socialise.

What kind of activities and events does Dev Soc get involved with?
The active committee meet on a weekly basis where we organise Dev Soc’s calendar. In previous semesters we have held a variety of different occasions including socials in the SU Bar, Postgrad Nights and jointly with the School we have helped with some fundraising events including Dev’s famous Coffee Mornings! Last semester the star attraction was certainly the Christmas Party which we held at the Assembly House and over 180 DEV people attended.

How many members do you have?
Currently, we have over 100 members in Dev Soc but we are always recruiting!

What is the Ziggurat Challenge and how is Dev Soc involved in the School's participation?
The Ziggurat Challenge is a ‘recreational level’ inter-school sports tournament open to all staff, students and alumni of the University. Each week features a different sport and there are 21 events in total. The competition is completely free for everyone to take part in and is designed to promote enjoyable participation of sports and encourage some friendly interaction between schools.

Most schools of the University enter a team each week and DEV is no exception. With teams made up of experts to novices, the events are always fun and it is a great way for Dev’ers to mingle and try sports they’ve never played (or in some instances, even heard of!). From swimming to korfball, we have played it all already this year and with our strongest sports still to come, such as dodgeball and touch rugby, we hope to do better than ever before this year!

How do I join Dev Soc?
If anybody is at all interested in joining, and they don’t have to be from the School of International Development, and would like to give it a go, please feel free to contact us by email n.quinlan-norburn@uea.ac.uk

We are also always looking for new sports reps to help organise the DEV teams for the Ziggurat challenge. If you would be interested in helping out please contact the Dev Soc email address above. We’d also love to hear from anyone with suggestions for Dev Soc events or generally help out at the same email address.
