MRes International Development Leaflet

The ESRC-recognised MRes International Development degree offers an advanced programme of research training in development studies. You will study course modules in research epistemology, and in research techniques and analysis, practising and applying learned techniques through workshop sessions. In addition, you will learn research skills in your chosen area of specialism: natural resources, social studies or economics.


Course Profile 

Our Masters courses require students to undertake 180 credits:

  • Compulsory and Optional modules (100 credits)
  • Dissertation (80 credits)

Professional, Employability and Practical Skills

A range of optional seminars and workshops are offered during your Masters programme for the teaching and strengthening of student skills. Sessions to support learning - in particular essay and dissertation writing - occur throughout the year. Development practice training is also provided. Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Recognition

The MRes International Development received 1+3 recognition in the most recent ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) recognition exercise. This means that the degree programme meets the formal ESRC requirements for research training in Area Studies and Development Studies at the Masters' level. UK and EU applicants may apply to the ESRC for PhD research funding under the 1+3 or the +3 studentship programmes.
