Development Economics Leaflet

The MA Development Economics degree is directed and taught by a team of experienced and internationally-respected development economists. The course provides advanced postgraduate level training opportunities both to recent graduates and mid-career professionals looking to update their analytical techniques and practical skills, or to acquire new ones.

The study of poverty and development in low-income countries is attracting more attention around the world than ever before. International development organisations and agencies (for example, the World Bank, IMF, DFID, Oxfam, Action Aid, WIDER) and academic institutions increasingly recognise that the study of economic development in a world that is experiencing rapid globalisation requires an approach that is analytically rigorous and, at the same time, problem- and policy-oriented.

This course emphasises the development of research skills that are essential, not only for further study in the field of development economics, but also in practical development work, preparing students for employment with government ministries, national and international development agencies, NGOs, and the private sector.

The MA Development Economics degree is offered over one year full-time, or two years part-time.
