Participants

The one-day workshop is relevant for Phd and masters students, researchers and practitioners across a range of disciplines and interests. For example, organizational studies, organizational psychology and organizational development, international development, social and community work. Key interests:  Learning organization; organizational culture and change; participatory methodology and qualitative research. The methodology is applicable for the sole researcher and research teams.

   

 

Workshop style: Dr Penelope J. Plowman uses a mixture of inputs and exercises to facilitate individual and group learning.

Session 1: Introduction and research context

1.1. Introductions and expectations for the day

1.2. Briefing on the research context for using the qualitative diary method

  • An organisational study addressing questions about gender and change using participatory methodology
  • Reflection, dialogue and the learning organisation
     
Session 2:  Diary Project Design

2.1. Introduction and overview of the ‘Diary Project’ – the name given to the adaptation of the diary method in the organisational study

2.2. Focus on planning - questions to ask at the outset


LUNCH BREAK 13.00 – 14.00


Session 3:  Diary Project Implementation, Analysis and Outcomes

3.1. Implementation – Setting up, writing and dialogue

3.2. Analysis and outcomes – How to do the analysis? What do the findings mean for the researcher and the organisation?

Session 4: Summary

4.1. Summary of steps, activities and methodological questions

4.2. Evaluation and close


Penelope PlowmanAbout Dr Penelope J. Plowman:

I work as an Independent Consultant in the field of organisational development and divide my time between teaching and direct support to development agencies. My practice as teacher, mentor, evaluator and researcher builds on twenty years in the development sector. I am interested in action research, qualitative methods and participatory methodologies for improving practice. Central to my work is the point of reflection in the learning cycle and building reflexive practice. To assist this I have developed two tools: The Plowman Qualitative Diary Process and the Personal Learning Journal.

The Plowman Qualitative Diary Process: My interest in the diary study began in the context of an ethnographic organisational case study for my doctoral research. Known as “The Diary Project”, the five step process and findings reveal the significance of qualitative diaries for deepening our understanding of organisations and change.

Personal learning journal: Key for individual learning, the Personal Learning Journal builds self- awareness over time and accompanies the Qualitative Diary Process and is the foundation for Mentoring.
