About The School of International Development

A Message From The Head of School

As the Head of the School of International Development I am happy to introduce you to the scope of teaching and research in the School. We attract nearly 400 students each year from 50 different countries to our programmes. We teach across a range of levels, from undergraduate and postgraduate to advanced courses related to professional and vocational subjects in development

The School of International Development is the only department that integrates the natural and social sciences in one unit, which means you will find us truly inter-disciplinary. My work in the School involves research and teaching alongside colleagues who are natural scientists, sociologists, economists and political analysts. We work together to create an integrated approach to analysing real world development problems such as poverty, globalisation, food security, conflict resolution, environmental degradation and the impact of HIV/AIDS.

The School is committed to making a difference, contributing to knowledge and providing advice/policy guidance on major problems and challenges in poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and international development. We achieve this by embracing excellence in teaching, interdisciplinarity and cutting-edge innovation in research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the School was in the top three departments in the UK for ‘development studies’, and in 2009 we were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of four decades of work in some of the world’s poorest countries.

If you join us in the School of International Development, you will discover many opportunities for exciting engagement in development issues, you will meet people from different cultures, explore challenging problems, build your individual and team skills and discover fascinating new career directions.
