DETAILS:
This is a new personal development programme for men and women, aimed at staff who are in non-management roles. If you are feeling stuck or thinking ‘is this it?’ about your job or life in general, this course could help you move forwards. As the name suggests this is about preparing for the journey ahead, getting ready for take-off ….and ultimately reaching your destination!
In a safe, supportive environment, with gentle guidance, FlightPlan will give you time and space to do some personal stock taking. It will help you to gain the confidence to identify opportunities and find new ways of moving on in your life.

The programme was first successfully piloted in Spring 2011. It consists of 4 full day workshops spread over a two month period, and participants will be required to attend all sessions.

The Creative Facilitator [NEW]

DETAILS:
This is not a facilitator training course, but a one day workshop for people who already have some experience of facilitating group activities and want to enhance their existing skills by taking a more creative approach. It will be useful to anyone involved in:
- Running and chairing meetings
- Leading or managing team discussions
- Teaching and training activities
- Any group work with a goal or task to achieve
Participants will be introduced to a variety of tools and techniques that can be used to facilitate typical group activities more creatively.
The benefits of using a more creative approach in your facilitation are numerous:
- Greater engagement of group members
- Generates positive energy and momentum
- Can help to break down barriers and build group rapport
- Caters for people’s different ways of self expression
- Ensures that everyone has a voice and the opportunity to contribute
- Challenges and stretches group members’ thinking
- More stimulating and therefore memorable
- Makes working together fun
The workshop is built around a selection of typical group interactions and activities and how they can be managed using alternative creative tools and techniques. Participants will also be encouraged to adapt or develop their own creative approaches, and consider how they can apply creative facilitation in their own context.
The workshop will involve practical work, discussion and group activity. A range of methods and materials will be used and handouts will be available. Please dress comfortably and come with an open mind! Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Listening Responsively and Referring Appropriately
DATE & TIME: Thursday 21 March 2013, 09.30-12.30

SESSION LEADER: Judy Moore, Director of UEA Counselling Services
DETAILS: Are you a magnet for other people’s problems? Do you sometimes feel out of your depth when trying to help? This session aims to look at some of the difficulties encountered by sympathetic listeners who can find themselves wondering how they can best help students and staff who turn to them in times of crisis.
The session will consider:
- How to identify what is the main problem
- When and how to refer someone on
- What resources are available and how to access them
We will consider some basic assessment skills (listening, reflecting back, paraphrasing, summarising) and how these can be naturally implemented in ordinary conversation. Information about University resources and referral routes will be provided as well as details of specialist organisations and agencies in the city. The session will involve some listening exercises in pairs and two or three participants will be invited to role play specific situations to help integrate the learning at the end of the morning.

Assertiveness Workshop

DETAILS: This is a two part workshop which aims to help people understand how their own behaviour affects their communication with others. Learning to express yourself in a clear and direct way, without resorting to aggressive or non assertive behaviour, results in more effective and confident communication. These assertive skills may take time and practice to cultivate, but can be used to good effect in your personal and professional interactions with others. The workshop involves a mix of theoretical input, discussion, practical exercises and self reflection, and will explore how assertive skills and techniques may be applied to particular situations.
The workshop is open to all staff. Participants are required to attend both sessions.

Assertive Communication for Managers [NEW]

DETAILS: Communicating assertively results in more respectful and productive working relationships; aggressive and non-assertive behaviour can be a barrier. This is a short workshop for managers who wish to develop a more assertive approach to communicating with staff. Taking elements from the longer two part course on assertiveness, the workshop will focus on different behaviour types and their effects in the managerial context. We look at key assertive skills and techniques, and tips on how to apply them to different situations in the workplace. There will be a mixture of discussion, individual reflection, groupwork and practical exercises.

Communication Skills Workshop [NEW]

DETAILS: Few skills are as important as effective communications. While listening to instructions, expressing an opinion, offering expert guidance or in any number of other situations your effectiveness in your career, your place in the team and your prospects for promotion are all influenced by how well you communicate with others.
In this one day workshop we will explore communications in a general way in an effort to gain a better understanding of the process and how we can become more effective communicators at work.
During the workshop we will consider:
- Why and how we communicate
- The strengths and weaknesses of different forms of communication
- How to use questions effectively
- How to overcome communication barriers

DETAILS: This session explains the UEA appraisal process from an appraiser’s point of view, offering plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion. DETAILS: Many people find themselves in a position where they are required to take minutes at meetings, often without having had any previous training or experience. This may be as an additional responsibility to your current role or it could form part of the duties of a new post. This course is designed for staff with little or no experience of taking minutes. It will cover the key aspects including the preparation of agendas, the structure and content of minutes and different minute taking styles. It will provide useful tips on writing effective minutes and will include a variety of practical exercises for participants to try. A workbook will be provided.
