| PROGRAMME DETAILS |
| This programme has been designed to provide a basic grounding in teaching skills for postgraduate teaching assistants. It is based on the HEFCE Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning project Developing Postgraduates’ Teaching Skills in the Sciences which was developed at UEA and is now being used extensively at other universities. The programme was praised in the recent Quality Assurance Agency institutional audit and is a university recommendation for all postgraduates wishing to become involved with teaching or classroom support. The aim of the programme is to equip postgraduate teaching assistants with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to be effective in a range of teaching contexts. To achieve this aim the programme, consisting of core and optional modules, is delivered over a period of 6-8 weeks. Modules are participant-centred and are based on a series of task-focused practical activities. Click to download the latest Programme Leaflet for full details. |
| REQUIREMENTS |
|
To complete the programme, participants are required to attend the three core modules and a minimum of two options (although it is possible to attend all options if you wish). All the core modules and the most popular optional modules are repeated Autumn, Spring and Summer, though sSome optional modules will only run once or twice each academic year. Maximum benefit will be gained if participants are actively engaged in teaching whilst undertaking the programme. Priority will be given to those who are teaching. For participants not currently involved in teaching, learning on the programme will be considerably enhanced by obtaining some teaching experience. You are therefore encouraged to approach your School to see if this is possible to arrange. If it is not possible, observing an experienced academic in a variety of teaching environments (e.g. teaching from the front, seminars, tutorials, practical classes) is recommended. In the Science Faculty it may be possible to participate in the ‘Teaching Shadowing’ scheme (contact SCI PGR Office). |
