    The Western Lit Survival Kit by Sandra Newman

    ‘The Western Lit Survival Kit: An Irreverent Guide to the Classics, from Homer to Faulkner’ is the new book by UEA alumna Sandra Newman and has just been published by Gotham Books. Sandra graduated from UEA’s Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA in 2002, when she was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award for her debut novel ‘The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done’. This was followed by ‘Cake’ in 2007, ‘How Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them’ (with Howard Mittelmark) in 2010, and ‘Changeling: a Memoir’, also in 2010. Her new novel ‘The Country of the Ice Cream War’ will be published later this year. Read more

    Deirdre Madden's new book for children

    ‘Jasper and the Green Marvel’ is the new novel for children by UEA alumna Deirdre Madden and has just been published by Faber and Faber. Deirdre graduated from UEA’s Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA in 1985 and published her first novel ‘Hidden Symptoms’ the following year. Her second novel ‘Birds of the Innocent Wood’ won a Somerset Maugham Prize in 1998. ‘One by One in the Darkness’ (1996) and ‘Molly Fox’s Birthday’ (2008) were both shortlisted for the Orange Prize. Deirdre’s previous books for children are ‘Snake’s Elbows’ (2005) and ‘Thanks for Telling Me, Emily’ (2007). Read more

    Sally Tissington's debut novel

    ‘Crocodile on the Carousel’ is the first novel by UEA alumna Sally Tissington and has just been published by G-Press. Sally graduated from UEA’s Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA in 2006. Already an accomplished visual artist, Sally is currently the Writer-in-Residence at Trinity School in Leamington. Read more

  • Luke Williams wins Saltire Award

    Luke Williams wins Saltire Award

    UEA Creative Writing alumnus Luke Williams is the winner of the Saltire Society’s Scottish First Book of the Year Award for his debut novel, ‘The Echo Chamber’, which was published by Hamish Hamilton last year. Luke was born in 1977 and grew up in Fife, Scotland. He studied History at Edinburgh University before joining the UEA Creative Writing MA in 2001. After graudation he was awarded the 2003 Charles Pick Fellowship and subsequently moved to London, where he set up a live literature event, Plum, with fellow UEA graduate, Natasha Soobramanien, who contributed two chapters to ‘The Echo Chamber’ and with whom he is collaborating on a new novel-length project combining fiction and non-fiction. Natasha's first novel will be published by Myriad later this year. Read more

    Katy Darby's first novel

    ‘The Whores' Asylum’ is the debut novel by UEA alumna Katy Darby and is published this week by Fig Tree. Katy (pictured) graduated from the Creative Writing MA in 2006, when she was the recipient of the David Higham Award. Her work has been read on BBC Radio, and published in various magazines and anthologies including Stand, Mslexia, Slice and the Arvon and Fish anthologies. She teaches Short Story and Novel Writing at City University, and runs the live literature event, Liars’ League, in London.     Jim Goar's new collection of poems

    ‘The Louisiana Purchase’ is the second full-length collection of serial poetry by Jim Goar, who is currently completing his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA. The collection is published by Rose Metal Press. His first collection, ‘Seoul Bus Poems’, was published by Reality Street Press in 2010, and his chapbook ‘Whole Milk’ in 2006.   • Andrew Miller wins Costa Book Award

    Andrew Miller wins Costa Book Award

    UEA alumnus Andrew Miller was this evening announced as the winner of the Costa Book Award for 2012. The prize, worth £30,000, was awarded for his sixth novel, ‘Pure’, which is published by Sceptre. It was previously announced as the winner of the Novel category. Andrew (pictured) graduated from the Prose Fiction MA in 1990 and published his first novel, ‘Ingenious Pain’, in 1997. This won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction, the Italian Grinzane Cavour Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. His third novel, ‘Oxygen’, was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award and the Booker Prize in 2001. Another UEA graduate, Christie Watson (2008), won the £5,000 Costa First Novel Award, while Martyn Bedford (1994) was shortlisted for the Children’s Book of the Year Award. Read more

  • Eliza Robertson wins Booker scholarship

    Eliza Robertson wins Booker scholarship

    The recipient of this year’s UEA Booker scholarship to undertake the Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA is Canadian writer, Eliza Robertson. The scholarship is open to students from the UK, Commonwealth countries and Ireland, and is worth up to £25,000, including return air fares. The winner is selected by a panel of UEA Creative Writing tutors. Eliza (pictured) graduated with distinction from the Creative Writing programme at the University of Victoria. Her stories have won fiction contests in The Malahat Review, PRISM International and The Fiddlehead, and have been shortlisted for the McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize and the National Magazine Awards. She is the third winner of the Booker scholarship. DW Wilson, the inaugural recipient, was the winner last year of the BBC National Short Story Award. His collection of stories, ‘Once You Break A Knuckle’, will be published in the UK later this year. Last year’s winner Anthony Good has just completed his first novel. Read more

    Agnes Lehoczky's new collection

    ‘Rememberer’ is the second full-length collection of poetry by UEA alumna, Agnes Lehoczky, who last year received the inaugural Jane Martin Poetry Prize at Girton College, Cambridge. ‘Rememberer’ is published by Egg Box and supported by the Arthur Welton Poetry Award. Agnes graduated from UEA’s Creative Writing (Poetry) MA with distinction in 2006 and completed her PhD in Critical and Creative Writing in 2010 under the supervision of George Szirtes. She taught for two years on UEA’s undergraduate programme before taking up a position teaching on the MA course at the University of Sheffield. Her first two short collections of poetry were published in Hungary in 2000 and 2002, and in 2008 she published her first English collection of poems, ‘Budapest to Babel’, also with Egg Box. Her collection of essays on the poetry of Ágnes Nemes Nagy, ‘Poetry, the Geometry of Living Substance’, was published in 2011 by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Read more

    Katy Darby in Fatboy Review

    Two new stories by UEA alumna Katy Darby are included in the latest edition of the online journal FatboyReview. Katy (pictured) graduated from the Creative Writing MA in 2006, when she was the recipient of the David Higham Award. Her first novel, ‘Whores' Asylum’, will be published by Penguin next month. FatboyReview is edited by Richard House, who gained his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing from UEA in 2008 and currently lectures at the University of Birmingham. The journal features work in a variety of media (text, film, photo, sound) and includes in addition to Katy’s work photographs from writer Lynne Tillman, a short film from Academy Award winner Eva Orner, a film from the archives of the Banco di Napoli by Jonas Mekas, a short graphic novel about New Orleans by artist Matjames, a first film by young Afghan filmmaker Suleiman Amanzad, poems by Elsa Braekkan-Payne, two chapters from a novel by Norwegian writer Tore Renberg, a graphic/text piece by artist Mitchell Kane, a short story in sections by Berlin writer Marcus Speh, and a short film by the Turrell twins.     Tom Benn's debut novel

    ‘The Doll Princess’ is the first novel by recent UEA Creative Writing graduate, Tom Benn, and is published by Jonathan Cape today. Tom (pictured) graduated from UEA's BA in English Literature with Creative Writing in 2009, and graduated from the MA in Prose Fiction in 2010, having been that year's recipient of the Malcolm Bradbury Memorial Bursary. 'The Doll Princess' is set in Manchester in the wake of the IRA bombing. 'Chamber Music', the second of a projected series of literary crime novels set in gangland Manchester, will be published next year. Tom is currently working on a historical novel, for which he was awarded a bursary from the Arts Council's Grants for the Arts scheme.   • Christie Watson wins Costa First Novel Award

    Christie Watson wins Costa First Novel Award

    Recent UEA graduate Christie Watson has won the 2012 Costa First Novel Award. Christie (pictured) graduated from the Prose Fiction MA in 2008 and published her first novel, ‘Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away’, with Quercus last year. Before joining UEA, where she was the recipient of the Malcolm Bradbury Memorial Bursary, she worked as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, a teacher of nursing and as a senior sister. She lives in London and is currently writing her second novel. Another UEA alumnus, Andrew Miller (1990), won the £5,000 Costa Novel Award, while Martyn Bedford (1994) was shortlisted for the Children’s Book of the Year Award. The overall winner of the Costa Book of the Year Award, which is worth £30,000, will be announced on 24th January. Read more
