A beginners' course in British Sign Language assuming no prior or minimal knowledge of the language. It is designed to provide students with basic training in communication with deaf people and an awareness of life and culture in the deaf world. Teaching and learning strategies include the use of signed conversation, role play, games and exercises to embed vocabulary and principles unique to a visual language. Assessment is based on a Sign Language conversation and three in-class assessments. The module can be taken in any year. Alternative groups may be available depending on student numbers. Students will have to attend one of the groups which will be taught on Mondays, 10.00 am - 12.30 pm (B2*B3*E4), 1.30 pm - 4.00 pm (C5*C6*C7) and/or 5.00 pm - 7.30 pm ( A9*10*EY/) or Wednesdays, 14.20 pm - 16.50 pm (E6*E7*E8), subject to student enrolment/timetables.
