The Service is open to all students and staff of the University and we work with people on both a short term and longer term basis. We try to arrange the first 'exploratory' appointment as soon as possible, usually within a few days. It lasts up to half an hour and enables an initial outlining of the problem or issue and gives an opportunity to discuss whether counselling is the most appropriate form of help.
The counsellor will probably tell you a little about Person-centred counselling (the type of counselling offered by the Service) and you can ask any questions you may have.
There are both male and female counsellors and a limited range of nationalities and ethnicities. Please say if you have a preference about who you see and we will attempt to meet your request.
If counselling does not seem the right option, your counsellor will discuss possible alternatives with you. Appointments can be booked in person, by phone or by e-mail.
Memos for Circumstances Affecting Study:
Please note that it is the University Counselling Service's policy only to provide memos for clients in on-going counselling. We do not normally provide memos at the initial / exploratory session.
To book an exploratory appointment contact the Counselling Service Reception on (01603) 592 651 (or ext. 2651) or email: csr@uea.ac.uk. For further detail of our location and opening times see the About Us and Contact pages.
What happens next?
Following the exploratory appointment, we will arrange an ongoing time as soon as one becomes available. From this point you will see the same counsellor. Appointments are usually weekly at the same time and last for 50 minutes.
Cancellations
We stress the importance of keeping appointments. Any necessary cancellations should be arranged with your counsellor, though in unforeseen situations reception can be contacted or a message left on the 24 hour voicemail.
