Constructing a Novel Workshop: 30 credits at Masters Level (FHEQ level 7)
"A novel is balanced between a few true impressions and the multitude of false ones that make up most of what we call life". Saul Bellow
Writing a novel is a long haul. This Masters level module will give you the tools and support you will need. Who can apply? Firstly people who are seriously committed to writing creatively. You must be a practising (but not necessarily published) writer wishing to develop your craft in a supportive and informed environment.
The Course
The course will be partly taught and partly student led in that students will present their own work on a weekly basis. The critiquing of this work will provide the group with an opportunity to further develop critical skills, and a range of themes and experiences in writing as well as providing continual opportunity for formative assessment.
Students will be expected to produce a portfolio consisting of an 8,000 – 10,000 word novel extract, submitted at the end of the course. This must demonstrate an understanding of the components of the novel with regard to structure, character, dialogue, viewpoint, beginnings, endings and sustainability of interest. A critical appraisal of 2,000 words must also be submitted, which will focus on the process of writing, and will demonstrate that the student has carried an idea through by way of drafts and has an understanding of potential readership/marketing.
Apply early for this popular course as places are limited.
