Professional Studies Bridging Programme

60 credits at level 2

The Professional Studies Bridging Programme provides HND students with a flexible progression route (or bridge) into a BA (Hons) degree in Professional Studies. It is aimed primarily at students who have achieved a BTEC/Edexcel Higher National Diploma (HND) award (in any discipline) in the past 5 years. Most HNDs are accredited at 180 credits (120 at level 1 and 60 at level 2). The Professional Studies Bridging Programme enables HND students to achieve an additional 60 credits at level 2 which will effectively place them on an even footing with students on Foundation Degrees (240 credits, levels 1 & 2). The Professional Studies Bridging Programme enables HND students to develop a range of generic academic study skills necessary for successful study at honours level. They will be able to update and refresh their research and writing skills, and their communication skills whilst also developing skills of self-reflection and effective independent learning which are so important in the completion of a degree.

The inclusion of a 20 credit free choice element within the programme also provides students with an opportunity to re-engage with the subject-specific aspect of their HND studies (e.g. construction, agriculture, catering, sports studies). The Professional Studies Bridging Programme starts in February 2008 and finishes in July 2008. On satisfactory completion of the course students will be automatically eligible to access the BA (Hons) Professional Studies programme with full articulation of 240 general credits. Because of its flexible, part-time format, the course can be combined with full or part-time employment.

The objectives of the Professional Studies Bridging Programme are:

•  To enhance students' understanding of the idea of 'profession' and 'professional', and their own professional role(s) and responsibilities within the workplace.

•  To introduce the principles of reflective learning (including cognitive skills and abilities) and engage students in the process of personal reflection on their own development

•  To facilitate the development of students' transferable skills - especially those likely to enhance their effectiveness in their professional role(s) in the workplace

•  To enhance students' academic research and writing skills
