Career History

Before joining UEA in 1993 Richard worked for Plessey Naval Systems and then Marconi Underwater Systems as a mathematician.

Academic Background

I hold a first degree in electronics and a PhD in the application of statistical estimation theory to the passive synthetic aperture problem. My early career was concerned with problems in signal processing, acoustics and vibration. When I joined UEA I was able to apply these interests to image processing and have been working in the field of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence since then. I conjunction with Andrew Bangham I have developed a series of novel image analysis algorithms called sieves. I am currently looking at applying these to a number of problems of which the most prominent in the media is automatic lip reading.

I have acted as consultant for a number of international companies and as Executive and Non-Executive Director for several spin-outs and start-ups.

Also hold several posts in the Vice-Chancellor's Office where I am the Academic Director for Admissions (responsible for all the University's Admissions and Outreach activity), the Academic Director of Internationalisation (which is concerned with the University's international links). I also Chair the Low Carbon Innovation Fund (LCIF) Investment Committee which is the body that approves all investment decisions.

Key Research Interests

Richard Harvey is part of the Scale-space Group and the Speech, Language and Music Group

Most of my current research works relates to problem of visual speech - how much language can we discern from people's lips?

Follow this link for details of current PhD opportunities in Computing Sciences. But feel free to email me to discuss projects outside these areas and alternative sources of funding.

Key Responsibilities

Current responsibilities include:

Academic Director of Admissions for UEA
Academic Director of Internationalisation for UEA

Former responsibilities include: Dean UEA London (founding position) and Associate Dean for Science Admissions (founding position).
