Artificial neural networks and evolutionary algorithms are computational abstractions inspired by nervous systems and natural selection. When combined, evolutionary algorithms can be used to find and optimize neural networks for performing desired tasks. This talk will begin by introducing basic models of neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. It will discuss the use of these models in combination, highlight a few results and point out some limitations in the use of the basic models. More recent techniques that have been designed to overcome the limitations will be described. The talk will conclude with an overview of a pair of my current projects applying these techniques.
