Biography
I was educated as a mathematician (graduating in 1963) so, naturally, I have always had additional interests. These include archaeology, geology, engineering models and music.
From 20 years experience as a local councillor, I have gained knowledge of the UK land planning system.

Career
I joined the old School of Computing Studies in 1979 as Manager of Computing Support Staff. Since taking early retirement in 1995 I have been an Honorary Research Fellow.
Academic Background
My PhD on "Computer-aided investigation of ancient cadastres" was awarded by the University of East Anglia in 1993.
Key Research Interests
Most of my research has been directed towards ancient Roman systems of land management. For this I have adopted and developed computational tools and statistical measures.
I am also interested in the way in which archaeologists and historians appreciate numerical information.
