After time as a student, postdoc and lecturer at Nottingham Gareth joined the Maths department at UEA and subsequently CMP.

Gareth Janacek read Mathematics (BSc) and Applied Statistics (MSc) at Manchester before working in the Center for Human Genetics at Sheffield. Academia called and he went to Nottingham to do a PhD under Sir Clive Granger (now a Nobel prize winner).

Gareth is a member of the Modeling and Algorithms Group [MAG] within the School of Computing Sciences at UEA and his main interests are:

The Analysis of time series:

He has had a long running interest in time series analysis, current interests include;

• The clustering of time series, in particular using clipped series.
• Spatial time series models, in particular for modeling the Madden Julian effect.
• The analysis of extremes of UK temperature and rainfall time series.

Statistical Quality Control:

After spending much time as a guest of the Manufacturing Engineering Department at Warwick he got interested in problems in quality control, in particular SPC.

Statistical Modeling:

He has always had a passion for statistical modelling in almost all areas and is evangelical about the use of R for this purpose.
