Career
Stephen was appointed as a Lecturer in January 2005 and is part of the Graphics, Vision and Speech Lab. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in August 2012.
Stephen's research interests include Haptic Rendering, Collision Detection, Deformable objects and Real-time rendering. He is also interested in the application of new graphics techniques to Cultural Heritage, scientific visualisation and virtual training simulations. His research into haptic rendering led to a book chapter on the subject included in the book titled "Haptic Rendering: Foundations, Algorithms and Applications" edited by Ming Lin and Miguel Otaduy. His research in this area continues with the development of novel haptic rendering algorithms suitable for Molecular Graphics. Software based on these algorithms is available for download from http://www.haptimol.co.uk. The latest features of HaptiMOL ISAS are shown in the video. For more details on his research and publications please click on the research box above.
PhD Projects
Academic Background
Stephen gained a First Class degree in Computing Science in 2001 from the School of Information Systems (now known as the School of Computing Sciences), UEA. He was awarded a PhD titled "The Haptic Rendering of Tools in a Virtual Environment" from the School of Computing Sciences, UEA in 2005.
Key Research Interests
Stephen Laycock is part of the Computer Graphics Group.
Stephen's research focuses on haptic rendering, geometric algorithms and real-time rendering. He is particularly interested in using haptic feedback devices for education and training. Research projects include using haptics within medical training and the use of haptics to aid in the understanding of the mechanical properties of proteins. Software has been released for interacting with biomolecules using a haptic device (http://www.haptimol.co.uk). The latest features of HaptiMOL ISAS are shown in the video. Stephen is also interested in the application of new graphics techniques to the fields of Cultural Heritage, Scientific Visualisation and Virtual Training Simulations.
