Year in industry/year abroad

Many of our degree courses allow you to spend a year on a placement in industry or to study for year at a university abroad.

Year in industry

The Year in Industry gives you a wonderful opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge that you have learnt in your previous two years study in the School of Computing Sciences in a real industrial/commercial setting. (ie. BSc Computing Science with a year in industry, BSc Actuarial Sciences with a year in industry )

You will be paid a salary by the host company, and the focus of the year will be a project that is agreed beforehand between the School of Computing Sciences and the company.  The project will be designed to develop and expand your skills, and throughout it, you will work with and be guided by experienced professionals at the company.  In addition, you will learn a lot of new skills that can’t easily be taught at a university (e.g. professional practices, team-working, time-management) and these will stand you in good stead when you have completed your degree and are looking for a job.

The aims of the year in industry are as follows:

  • To relate academic study to the ‘real’ world of industry and commerce.
  • To provide experience in the application of Engineering, Information Technology and Computing.
  • To experience aspects of industrial practice that cannot be taught in the classroom.
  • To motivate the development of intellectual skills and develop the personal attributes required of a professional graduate.

During the year, you will have plenty of support from the university, both from the Industrial training Co-ordinator, Dr Mark Fisher, and your Academic Adviser.  At the company, you will have an Industrial Supervisor and Mentor to supervise your work and provide guidance and advice, and you will be required to provide a monthly report on your activities.

For the cohort going on placements in September 2010 we have additional opportunities with:

Many other placements offer placements suitable for computing students including:

Year abroad

Students on relevant BSc degrees (i.e. BSc Computing Science with a Year Abroad) spend their second year at a university abroad, while students on relevant MComp degrees (i.e. MComp Computing Science with a Year Abroad) spend their third year abroad. The year abroad counts towards your degree classification and so adds no extra year to the length of your course. You can choose the university that you want to study at from a range of universities in the USA, Canada and Australasia.
