Niigata University Lecturers visit CIPP

Yumiko Matsui and Akemi Abe, both Nursing Lecturers at the Niigata University Health and Welfare, worked closely with Dr Susanne Lindqvist, Centre Director and Senior Lecturer in Interprofessional Practice, sharing lessons from across the Health Schools.

The main purpose of their visit was to learn and share best practice in Interprofessional Education (IPE). Both Mrs Matsui and Ms Abe were introduced to UEA through CAIPE, the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Learning, which is championed in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences by Dr Lindqvist.  Niigata University Health and Welfare is a leading institution for IPE in Japan, where the University’s President, Mr Takahashi, is the president of JAIPE – Japan’s Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Learning.

During their stay, Mrs Matsui and Ms Abe also had the opportunity to observe other teaching techniques in the Faculty, including Problem Based Learning and Enquiry Based Learning.

Commenting on the visit Yumiko Matsui said, “We are very impressed with what we have seen. Interprofessional education is vital in the advancement of patient care and we hope to take useful lessons back to Japan. We have also been impressed by the extent to which you use PBL and EBL – more than we do at Niigata, and it seems to be a very effective way to engage students and to encourage an interprofessional attitude of mind.”

Akemi Abe added, “Staying here for a month means we are really getting ‘under the skin’ of how things are done here – it makes the lessons more meaningful. It’s also been fantastic to experience Norwich and the surrounding area – it’s beautiful.”

Yumiko Matsui and Akemi Abe visited UEA in March 2010. Later in year, the Dr Lindqvist visited Japan to give a talk at Niigata University Health and Welfare as part of the CAIPE scheme to share best practice internationally.
