Lecturer in Forensic Science Appointed

Mon, 9 Jan 2012

Steve Day has recently joined the School of Chemistry as a lecturer in Forensic Science after 30 years in the Forensic Science industry with the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory and then the Home Office’s Forensic Science Service.

Steve has a wide knowledge of many evidence types such as footwear and glass, and specialises in Questioned Documents and Handwriting. He has appeared in Court on many occasions as an expert witness giving evidence on anything from cases involving the alteration of a simple parking ticket to complex fraud and acts of terrorism.

Steve was the lead scientist for Questioned Documents in the FSS, acting as a consultant both nationally and internationally. As the Chairman of the working group for Document Examination for the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) he has contributed to the development of European standards in the subject and presented a workshop on the Interpretation of Handwriting evidence in 2006; this was subsequently published in the Encyclopaedia of Forensic Sciences in 2009.

Closure of the Forensic Science Service in 2011/12 has meant a career change for Steve, but he firmly believes that “new advances will be made within University departments in future, not by the forensic providers”. Steve’s objective for the Forensic and Investigative Chemistry degree course is to provide a good Chemistry education while giving the students experience of what it is like to be an active Forensic Scientist.

Steve’s PhD is from Bristol University in organometallic chemistry and his thesis was on the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl complexes of tungsten and molybdenum. His main research interests today are in the development of techniques to improve interpretation of physical evidence in forensic science, in particular in document examination.

He is married, with two adult children and a 1960 Morris Traveller.   His UEA homepage is HERE.
