Mentees

Are you a current student looking for some help with those tricky first steps into graduate employment?

Update: Now open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students, subject to capacity.

Update: Please note that the in depth one-to-one mentoring pathway has now closed for applications. We can add your name to a waiting list and if there is capacity, we will be try to match you to a Mentor. However, our information interview pathway is open all year round and we can accept applications for this pathway at any point during the academic year.

If you answer yes to even one of the questions below, then our UEA Mentoring Programme could be just what you need to navigate your path towards a career.

  • Confused about what you would like to do after your degree?
  • Do you lack confidence to approach professionals and take those next steps?
  • Need guidance and support from someone who’s been there?
  • Have you identified the career sector you wish to pursue, but want some further information on the sector and how to progress?

If this is you, then check out the different ways a Mentor can help you.

1. Information Interviews

If you already know the sector you would like to work in and are looking for further information on this sector and/or how to progress within it, these one off information interviews with a professional in the field, can provide you with the information you need. The interview will give you the chance to talk to a Mentor, either by telephone or email for half an hour, to find out more about their job and the sector they work in.

2. Mentoring

With these one-to-one relationships, you'll have the opportunity to talk to a UEA alumnus (or other career professional) who can help you make decisions about your own plans and build up your confidence. You will receive six hours of one-to-one advice and guidance in person or via email or telephone over a six month period. At least one of your meetings will be in person with your mentor.

What can you expect from a one-to-one relationship?

You will be matched with a suitable Mentor from the information you give on your Application Form. You may be matched with a Mentor who is a UEA Alumni, perhaps from the same School of Study or from a different School, or with a career professional who did not attend UEA but has a wealth of experience. All of our Mentors have a lot to offer you wherever they are from! You should not expect to be offered work experience from your Mentor and we would discourage you from asking.

In addition, we are planning to run e-mentoring within the Mentoring Programme in future academic years.

If you are unsure if you would benefit from taking part in the Mentoring Programme, please do get in touch with Kerensa who would be happy to discuss any concerns or queries you might have. Kerensa can be contacted on 01603 597637 or careermentors@uea.ac.uk.

Please read the Mentee Statement of Commitment Form before applying to the Programme. This sets out Mentee obligations and the scope of your commitment and responsibility during the mentoring period. You will be asked to sign this when you apply after you have completed the Registation Process.

You can register your interest by completing the Registration Form and emailing it to Kerensa at careermentors@uea.ac.uk

The Registration and Application forms will ask for further details in order to help us find the best match for you, so it is important to fill in as much detail as you can to help us do this. If you want advice on how to complete any of the forms, please do make an appointment at the Careers Centre and a Careers Advisor can help you. Completed Registration and Application forms should be emailed to Kerensa at careermentors@uea.ac.uk

If you are unsure about the Application Process, please do get in touch with Kerensa.
