References

Well before you apply, you should take steps to secure your references

General Advice about Referees

  • Do not assume potential referees will agree to act on your behalf. Ask permission from them before putting their names on your application forms and CVs.
  • Do not automatically approach the most senior potential referee, such as a professor, unless you were taught by them and they know enough about you to best write your reference.
  • Do not assume your referees will know or remember enough about you to write an adequate reference. Provide your referees with details about your academic, extra-curricular and work experience.
  • Explain the type of work you are seeking and why. If possible, give details of the post itself.
  • Indicate your important strengths relevant to the application you are making.
  • Wherever possible, discuss your personal information with your chosen referees.

How to nominate your UEA academic referees

If you have already graduated

You should directly contact your potential referees as soon as possible to request that they agree to act on your behalf.

If you are still at UEA

The University has developed a method for you to nominate academic referees that you will use to provide references when applying for employment or further study. You should nominate referees using the ‘Nominate Referees’ link on the Student page of e:Vision which can be accessed via the UEA portal, using the ‘Academic’ tab and clicking on the link on the right for ‘Student View’. Alternatively, login via https://evision.uea.ac.uk.

You can nominate up to three referees but you will not need to nominate your current academic adviser or primary and secondary supervisors. Any previous advisers or primary and secondary supervisors or other members of your supervisory team will need to be nominated if you wish them to be a referee for you though.

Your nominees will be notified automatically by e-mail and will be able to approve or reject the nomination. You will be informed by email of their decision. If approved, these members of staff will have access to your details within e:Vision, which they will be able to use in the future, when writing a reference for you.
