Careers Advice for PG Researchers and Research Staff

Welcome to the Careers & Employability pages dedicated to supporting the career development of Postgraduate Researchers and Research Staff. Completing a PhD and unsure of your next steps? Want to explore how you can use your PhD in other sectors? You've come to the right place.

Research degrees are respected and valued qualifications across a wide range of sectors. Traditionally, the PhD has been seen as the main route into academic life. Today around 50% choose to follow this career route and the remainder go into a diverse range of careers. You can find out more about this in the 'Exploring your Options' section.  Given that PhD graduates go into a wide range of occupations it is also important to look at what the rest of the Careers & Employabilty Centre can offer you. There is a team of career advisers with specialist knowledge who can also offer valuable advice and guidance in specifc work areas. Most of the events such as the Employability Fair, workshops and quick query appointments are open to postgrads aswell as undergrads. Supervisers, colleagues, friends and family can also be valuable sources of information.

There are three main sections covering the following:

Exploring Your Options

Which career path is for you? Links to articles to help you consider the pro's and con's of staying in academia. Statistics so that you can see where PhD grads go. A brief outline of some of the options beyond academia.
