Cycling at UEA
UEA's facilities and schemes supporting cycling have significantly improved over recent years and we hope the trend will continue. BUG continues to represent the views of cyclists and tries to ensure that new developments have a positive effect on cycling at UEA.
Recent and upcoming developments
With the removal of the contractors' car park from University Plain (between Suffolk Walk and the Broad), a new pedestrian/cycle path has been created. This is a useful link between the North Park/Bluebell junction and the western end of campus/NRP/hospital. It features innovative floor-level lighting which is solar powered and uses "long-lasting" LEDs (although several were replaced within the first year!), and does not cause light pollution, although some users report that seeing pedestrians at night can be difficult. If you have any comments, please contact BUG!
UEA information - practical
Want to see if cycling is for you?
UEA has a number of schemes letting you try before you buy, and spread the cost of purchasing a bike.
For more information on any of the above schemes you can contact the Transport team- email transport@uea.ac.uk.
Commuter routes to UEA. We need more - to add yours to the map.
Where to park your bike - this is our own map. A printed map and leaflet is also available from the Registry, Estates reception, Security Lodge and school receptions, or online as a PDF.
Secure parking is available on campus (see map, above) - those wishing to use it should fill in
this form and return it to Transport, EST.
Cycle theft and security at UEA.
The University has agreed that
employees can claim 20p per mile for using a cycle on UEA business. This was
agreed in March 2002. Check with your accounts manager first
to make sure that your trip is eligible.
A cycle pump is available to borrow from the Security Lodge. Small puncture repair kits are available for just £2 from the Post Office - ideal to keep in your desk or bag.
If you encounter problems with any of the cycle paths on campus (e.g.
broken glass, defective lights), you can contact Estates on extension 2121 (01603 592121 from
external phones). Cow Drive (between the car park and
SportsPark, leading to Blackdale School and Bluebell Road is now maintained by UEA.

Desired developments
BUG would like to see:
Information on cycle routes and parking given to visitors on the UEA website and in any printed matter, in the same way that car parking, bus routes and taxi information are currently given.
A link between the Music/Street end of the existing East Campus Link route (from Bluebell Road at North Park Avenue) and the road by the Studio/LCR would increase the usefulness of what is currently a dead end for cyclists.
More, and better quality, cycle parking at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, both to serve students and staff and to encourage visits by bike. Current cycle parking is on grass, and the stands have sharp angular edges.
Noticeboards and information signs at all main cycle parking, giving security advice and pointing cyclists to nearby parking if their first choice is full.
Improvements to access for cyclists through Orwell Gate.
