About the UEA Bicycle User Group
We aim to:
- Encourage UEA students and staff to cycle
- Promote cycling as a viable means of commuting on environmental, health and financial grounds
- Provide an information resource for cyclists and would-be cyclists at UEA
- Provide a way for cyclists to communicate with each other, and with the University, about cycling issues
- Represent cyclists in UEA transport planning and implementation at all levels
We support:
- Increased cycle parking provision at the university
- Improved quality and security of existing cycle parking
- Improved cycle paths on campus and on the routes to and from it from all directions
- Provision of more cyclist-friendly facilities such as showers, lockers and drying rooms
- Reporting of thefts and vandalism to get an accurate picture of cycle crime at UEA
- Provision of cycle-related services at UEA, e.g. repairs, sales of parts and accessories
- Use of bicycles for UEA business, and the claiming of bicycle mileage allowance for these trips
- UEA's two bicycle purchase schemes, Salary Sacrifice and Buy-Cycle, and the Try Before You Buy short term loan scheme (see Cycling at UEA for more information)
- Events and schemes such as National Bike Week,
International Car Free Day, and
the Community Carbon Reduction Scheme (CRed)
Current issues
- We would welcome a review of the arrangements at the Cow Drive / Security Lodge area, and an assessment of how well they are working (or not).
- We believe that more good-quality cycle parking is needed on campus, especially that which is covered and secure. We welcome the University's ongoing programe of providing new cycle facilities and upgrading outdated racks, however the common sight of bicycles locked to almost any immovable object tells us that more investment is needed.
- We would like to see cyclists behaving more responsibly, especially using lights and high-visibility clothing at night, and following the Highway Code with regard to cycling on pavements and obeying traffic signs and signals. The inconsiderate actions of some cyclists not only put themselves and others at risk but create a negative perception of all cyclists among other road users.
Mailing list
We operate a low-traffic mailing list for announcements only. Having lost our internal newsgroup, we are investigating the best way to provide an easily accessible discussion forum for UEA cyclists.
Get involved!
Would you like to see a campaign on a particular issue? Do you have an idea for promoting cycling at UEA? Perhaps you're available to help out occasionally on stalls and information stands such as during Freshers' Week, Bike Week etc. - we welcome all help! Please get in touch.
