BIO’s Year in Industry Degrees Accredited by the Society of Biology
Following the announcement earlier in 2014 that BIO’s Year in Industry degrees were accredited by the Society of Biology, official accreditation was obtained at an awards evening on September 3rd. The awards were hosted by the Society of Biology at the Wellcome Collection in London and was attended on behalf of BIO by Dr Richard Bowater, Dr Helen James and Dr Mark Coleman.
Degrees accredited by the Society of Biology have to demonstrate that they provide graduates with the skills and experience needed to enter a successful career in the biosciences. Accredited degrees are those that meet the assessment criteria by:
- Developing research-ready graduates by providing practical research experience
- Focusing on academic excellence by teaching to most up-to-date knowledge and experimental techniques
- Delivering a defined set of knowledge, skill, and abilities
The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates from the programme meet defined sets of learning outcomes, including gaining a substantial period of research experience. BIO has two degrees that are now accredited: Biological Sciences with a Year in Industry and Biochemistry with a Year in Industry.
The evening also celebrated the award of the “Top Graduate” from accredited degree programmes and, for 2014 from UEA, this was awarded to Amy Timmins. Amy recently graduated from UEA with a First class honours degree in Biochemistry with a Year in Industry.

Also in attendance are Dr Mark Downs, Chief Executive of the Society of Biology (far left) and Prof Nessa Carey (second from left), who was the keynote speaker at the evening.
