Key Research Interests

The group is interested in the analysis of intrinsic and associated components of the extracellular matrix and the analysis of their biological functions. The present work focuses on three major topics:

Current Research Projects

  • Analysis of the consequences of the deficiency of the major collagen IV isoform α1.α1.α2(IV) in vivo by the use of knockout mouse models
  • Roles of annexin A5 deficiency in knockout mouse models on diverse biological processes, like calcification of cartilage and bone, blood coagulation, vascular development and apoptosis
  • Analysis of the role of annexin A5 in modulating the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells in vivo, the induction of immune reactions and autoimmunity
  • Isolation of murine pericytes and analysis of the specific phenotype by modern proteomic and genomic methods. Analysis of the contributions of pericytes
  • Exploration of the potential capacities of pericytes as stem cells for differentiation to some mesenchymal lineages (adipogenic, osteoblastic, chondrogenic) and its role during pathological changes in diseases

Life in our research group

Projects in the group are focused on the biochemistry of extracellular matrix components and their biological functions. Experimental work includes a diversity of methods in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and the analysis of mouse models and is undertaken in the well equipped molecular biology labs at the BMRC. There are active cooperations with the other groups presently working in the BMRC and at the School of Biological Sciences. Results are discussed in our regular lab meetings and journal clubs to keep up with our research areas, but also engage with the seminars in BIO and beyond.
