The MSc in Plant Genetics and Crop Improvement is taught jointly by members of the School of Biological Sciences and members of the John Innes Centre and includes a six month laboratory based research project.
Research and teaching in the School of Biological Sciences at UEA is internationally renowned. In the most recent HEFCE research assessment exercise (2001) the school was awarded an RAE rating of 5. Research within the school ranges from protein structure to conservation biology, and includes plant biology. The John Innes Centre and the Sainsbury Laboratory each have a world-wide reputation for research excellence in plant and microbial sciences. Research facilities on the Norwich Research Park are among the best in Europe and provide an excellent opportunity to learn state-of-the-art research techniques.
Students gain practical experience in a leading international research group under the supervision of the laboratory leader. Research projects are performed at UEA, John Innes Centre or the Sainsbury Laboratory and students submit a written report and present a research seminar which together account for 90 credits
Research projects are offered in the following areas:
- Plant genetics
- Plant genome organisation
- Plant gene function
- Cell and developmental biology
- Plant-microbe interactions
- Plant biotechnology
- Crop improvement
