An award from the UEA Alumni Fund set in place collaborative events between the School of Biological Sciences (BIO) and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA).
Whilst BIO and SCVA are close geographical neighbours on the UEA campus, cutting-edge research in biology and the arts are not easily compatible and there have been few direct links between these departments.
Thus, the interactions promoted by this Alumni funding was extremely beneficial in the preparation and development of multi- and inter-disciplinary teaching and research. The project was used to extend events and exhibitions at the SCVA in order to develop links between biology and the arts. The film linked to these web pages records one of the events that the project was involved with, and it provides a lasting archive that will help inform future discussions of such inter-disciplinary interactions.
During the lifetime of this Alumni project, the exhibition at the SCVA that had most direct relevance to the topic was "Basketry: Making Human Nature", which was in progress from 8 February -- 22 May 2011. Therefore, it was decided to develop a number of activities to link to this exhibition, which culminated in staff involved in this project participating in the "Late Shift" event that took place at SCVA on the evening of Wednesday 18 May 2011. This event was free and open to anyone, so a diverse audience attended -- as can be seen on the associated film!
