On Thursday 17th June 2010, the Faculty of Science at the University of East Anglia (UEA) hosted a special ‘Humane Research Trust’ evening to showcase research funded by the Trust in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Pharmacy at the University.
Four Research Group Leaders, Dr Michael Wormstone, Dr Julie Sanderson, Dr Jeremy Rhodes and Dr Mark Williams presented work from their laboratories on cataract, retina, myotonic dystrophy and gastroinstestinal disease.
The Humane Research Trust (THRT) promotes medical research which does not include the use of animals, with the objectives of advancing the diagnosis and treatment of disease in humans. The Trust has been a long and loyal supporter of research at UEA in the areas of eye and gut research. This fruitful partnership was initiated by the late Professor George Duncan, founder of the Norwich Eye Research Group, whose philosophy, “human models for human diseases” has remained the central theme of the research funded by the THRT at UEA.
The evening was opened by Professor Dylan Edwards, Head of the School of Biological Sciences, who welcomed everybody to the celebration of THRT funded research at UEA. Professor Edwards said, “I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation of all the Trust’s support for the School over nearly 20 years”. Following the opening remarks, Dr Wormstone gave a talk on ‘The Humane Research Trust Funding at UEA - Past, Present and Future’.
To thank the Trust, two teams of researchers from UEA and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital took part in a fun but very tactically ran multi-legged race on the following morning raising £902.40 for the Trust.
