From how rainbows happen to why our blood is red, Biological Sciences students from the University of East Anglia will be helping youngsters explore the colours of life at a free event on Saturday, March 6.
The Colours event, at the Inspire Discovery Centre in Norwich, will investigate how plants and animals use colours to make themselves stand out or disappear and find out how colour affects mood by measuring their own brainwaves.
A range of hands-on workshops will also be taking place including creating brightly coloured frog fridge magnets, making a Newton’s Colour Wheel, making pictures with chlorophyll and colouring slime with plant pigment.
Meanwhile Mini Monsters performances will see zoologist Kate Jackson introduce a range of exciting animals and creepy crawlies from giant African snails to millipedes, lizards, snakes and stick insects.
Dr Kay Yeoman, senior lecturer in the university’s School of Biological Sciences, has organised the event. She said: “This will be a brilliant hands-on active learning experience for families with children aged from two to 12. We want to show that thinking about and doing science is really good fun and something everyone can get involved with.
“The Inspire Discovery Centre is a fantastic place to learn, there is a toddlers play area and parents can relax in the café area, whilst watching their children discover a love of science.”
The free event takes place at the Inspire Discovery Centre on Oak Street, on March 6, from 10am-4pm. Free Mini Monsters performances will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
