BIO contains a dynamic research community with expertise that covers the full spectrum of biology. We take a holistic approach to studying biological mechanisms by integrating genome information with pure and applied research on microbial, plant and animal systems, and ecological studies of populations.
In RAE 2008 our research was once again acclaimed for its international impact: 90% of our research activity was classified as internationally leading, excellent or recognised, and the Panel recognised globally-leading research across all the School’s research Themes.” Over 98% of our faculty were returned in the RAE, therefore proving the strength and breadth of our research.
The school has three main research themes:
Inter-disciplinarity is fundamental to our research and we actively pursue collaborations across the UEA Science Faculty, with other faculties at UEA, e.g. the Faculty of Health, and with the wider international research community. Communication is facilitated through open seminar programs where international-impact researchers are invited to deliver presentations that cross interests and encourage a broad audience.
Our research is supported by an array of cutting-edge, in-house facilities, and strengthened by the access we have to world-leading expertise and resources across the Norwich Research Park through collaboration with affiliated institutes such as the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Food Research.
We are consistently successful in obtaining external research funding. Our success has helped placed UEA 6th (out of 99 UK HEI’s) in winning competitive grants across all the UK Research Councils in 2004/5, with the highest success rate for BBSRC, and 2nd highest for NERC funding. We also attract a large number of research Fellows and PhD students, funded by a wide range of national and international sources. We encourage all prospective applicants for such funding to contact us for help and advice.

"UEA was very important to me at a crucial time in my research life. I received a brilliant training as a research student which has stood me in good stead for the rest of my career. And, of course, I really enjoyed myself.“ Sir Paul Nurse, BIO PhD graduate, Nobel Prize winner and President of the Royal Society |
| The Sainsbury laboratory (TSL) is a world-class centre for plant and microbial sciences. Set up on the Norwich Research Park as a joint venture between the School of Biological Sciences, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, the John Innes Foundation and BBSRC, TSL now employs approximately 70 research scientists and support staff. TSL favours daring, long-term research and is housed in a modern building with access to state-of-the-art technologies and support services to enable cutting-edge science. Its main goals are:
