Careers

Our graduates have gone into a range of successful careers in the arts, media, education, and tourism. You'll develop transferable skills in collecting and analyzing information, the use of images and principles of design, writing and editing, public speaking, and teamwork, and the School's unique emphasis on the world-wide context of art and culture will also give you an edge in the job market.

Students in the School also receive help entering careers in the museum and galleries sector, thanks to our dedicated Co-ordinator of Student Internships and Museum Placements.

Boris Wastiau, Director of the Museum of Ethnography, Geneva
Boris Wastiau, Director of the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva.
I moved to Norwich in 1992 for an MA in Advanced Studies in Non-Western Art at the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. It was then a big move for me and the discovery of a new study and research culture. Bridging anthropology and art history, this training proved very valuable and I particularly appreciated the international background of both staff and students. Continuous support is what I appreciated most!

I had my first successful job application and left in 1996, when I was only beginning to write up my Ph.D. dissertation. After eleven years as curator of central African ethnography at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Belgium), I moved to the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva, first as curator for Africa and the Americas, and since February 2009 as director of the institution. I am alway impressed to find so many alumni of the SRU and of the School in the museums that I visit!

Anna Ellis, Interior designer, LondonAnna Ellis, alumna of the School of World Art Studies, University of East Anglia.
I'm Anna Ellis, and I graduated from WAM in 2003. I considered several universities, and after much thought, I chose UEA. Of specific appeal was their broad choice of modules which, unlike so many other History of Art departments, included but wasn't limited to Western Art. I was also particularly fond of the department's home - a large but welcoming building, filled with light and designed by Norman Foster. I loved my time at UEA. My course was varied and stimulating, my principal tutor Dr Thofner was an inspiration, and I'd be back there in a shot if I had my time again - the History of Art degree combined with a year in Australia would definitely be on my list!

I knew I didn't want to follow a career solely focusing in Art History when I enrolled at UEA, but I knew I loved the subject and was confident it would provide me a good basis in the career market. It did, and following a stint in Human Resources at The Courtauld Gallery, I went on to study Architectural Interior Design and set up my own interior design firm in 2006: www.annaellis.co.uk.

Andrew McClellan, Professor of Art History and Dean of Academic Affairs, Tufts University
Professor Andrew McClellan of Tufts University, who received his MA masters degree from the School of World Art Studies, University of East Anglia.
The year I spent at UEA was transformational. Having graduated with a BA in Philosophy & History of Art from UCL, I was unsure what I wanted to do next. A year of aimless temping, including a stint at the National Gallery, motivated me to do an MA in the School of World Art Studies at the University of East Anglia. The year I spent there, working closely with my faculty tutor (Alex Potts), taught me how to think and pursue research at the graduate level, and prepared me for doctoral work at the Courtauld and a career in art history.
