Biography

After qualifying as an Occupational Therapist I worked in adult physical disabilities in the UK and USA eventually specialising in hand therapy. It was during my clinical work with peripheral nerve injuries that I became particularly interested in the assessment of hand sensibility and hand function. I completed a Masters in Rehabilitation Sciences at Southampton University before joining the newly established undergraduate programme for occupational therapy and physiotherapy at UEA in 1992.  I completed my PhD in 2002 on the clinical assessment of peripheral nerve injuries in the hand.

Career summary

After several years working in the NHS in adult rehabilitation I specialised in hand therapy. Following completion of a MSc in Rehabilitation Studies I begun my career at UEA in 1992.

Key Research Interests

My  research interests lie in the area of hand rehabilitation and the development of  evidence-based approaches to clinical assessment and treatment of upper limb neuro-musculoskeletal disorders.  Through strong collaborative partnerships with upper limb surgeons and therapists regionally, nationally and internationally a programme of research has been developed which is designed to address the following key questions:

  • Which clinical tests and patient-rated outcome measures should be used in clinical trials of interventions for rehabilitation of upper extremity disorders?
  • What is the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of novel surgical and therapy interventions for specific disorders in the upper limb?
  • How effective are existing surgical and hand therapy interventions in improving functioning and minimising disability in neuro-musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity

Recent projects completed include:

A multi-centre, pragmatic randomised controlled trial of night splinting after surgical release of Dupuytren’s contracture

An observational study of sensory and motor recovery in patients undergoing carpal tunnel decompression

A pilot randomised controlled trial of sensory relearning to improve tactile sensibility and hand function after carpal tunnel decompression

Current projects:

I am currently funded by a National Institute for Health Research Senior Research Fellowship to undertake a five-year programme of research aimed at improving the clinical management of carpal tunnel syndrome.  It comprises a large cohort study to identify prognostic factors for response to corticosteroid injection and surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and a Phase III randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effect of sensory relearning in improving sensibility and hand function in patients with long-term sensory deficits after carpal tunnel decompression.
